Following Bill Gothard's teachings would certainly lead to the atmosphere you describe.
There's a copy of Toxic Faith on my shelf, but haven't gotten around to reading it yet.
I am not familiar with Leanne Payne, but I noticed, in doing a Google search on her name, that she has her own website, and that lots of other Christian websites are commenting on her. Much of the commentary is negative, apparently due to her emphasis on personal revelation and the importance of ritual in spiritual experience.
