The guy who started the story about screams supposedly coming out of a deep oil well in Siberia, Russia, later confessed it was a joke just to see if people would believe it. I had trouble with that story even before that admission, as how can incorporeal spirits have audible voices? Audible sound is created by vocal cords causing vibrations in the air, which phantoms don't have.
About the rich man in hell in the Gospel of Luke, the word "hell" there is actually Hades. So that would fit Josephus' description of the bad part of Hades being right next to Gehenna, the Lake of Fire. (See "Discourse Concerning Hades" in the complete works of Josephus.)
