It was mostly through the catholic church that most of the christian traditions survived over the last 2000 years and if I remember correctly they don't have the view that "this is the last generation". Many of the interpretations related to the "last days" have actually appeared these last days. Makes me think that there may be other factors to consider, even external to the christian faith, even to religion if one is trying to understand that twist in the history of christianity.
