Some were not Christians. I can confirm that for myself. I was not a Christian when I joined but I was sincere in my reasons, willingness and heart. I wanted the way of life, the utopia, the heaven on earth. I didn't even believe in God but after a few months of much reading and memorization it became as certain as I was alive for the first time. Berg had nothing to do with that, neither did his letters but the grace of God.
As you say, many others joined for reasons unknown to me but the vast majority joined because they wanted to have something to do with Jesus and with religious mission.
But now, those who are in are, are advanced in their own process of integration into Berg's and other evil doctrines. Things at that point get murky for me.
You say that those who stay in The Family do so as a result of pride and fear and know that it is not because of Jesus. That knowledge is to me the key question. If they know it is wrong and do it, they will end up with the same fate of Berg. Perhaps even Berg knew that then!?
If they are resisting the conviction of the Holy Spirit, then they are doomed, aren't they? And if they know it, things will be even worse.
I can't see it that way and that is why I doubt that there really are Christians in The Family though I am willing to entertain the ppossibility.
