I do agree with your comment that disciples today are very much more aware of what they're agreeing to now, including signing their belief to the coverups to the group's sordid past. But many block out the bad stuff, I think. It's called "compartmentalization" -- putting bad memories, bad doctrines and bad policies in a compartment and sealing it off. (Like the Titanic's compartments.) The Family calls it "wrapping your questions in a bundle of faith and putting them on a shelf."
