Scientology is an interesting cult, because the members stay in society and seek power and influence.
It is about money, and a lot of it. If you have $50 to your name, they have a $50 class. If you have $50,000 they have classes that cost that much too.
What you say about society and cults is very true. Anyone who has read about the Patty Hearst case knows that she was kidnapped, tortured, raped and brainwashed. They still convincted her of bank robbery and put her in prison. She was eventually pardoned. But, it didn't seem as though the court took any of the circumstances into account.
