I don't want to give you the wrong impression. I favor the patriot act. In fact, I think that it is a power the government needs and needed badly a long time ago. But alngside I must also say that we also need some democratic institutions strengthened so that the government as a whole remains in control of the people. That is a needed second leg of that type of legislation. I believe there is consensus on the fact that the founders distrusted government, even the democratic government that they were inventing.
As we say in spanish, some are "mas papistas que el Papa" (some are more papist than the Pope) and want control of those coallitions they dislike but are willing to blindly trust those they like. In that sense I can agree with you, that we as ex-members of a cult who suffered different forms of abuse, should be more like the founding fathers in their distrust of government rather than blindly sposing its shennanigans just because they say things are so.
