One of the books I read about cults and mind control suggested that the higher the "investment" the more people are willing to put up with, out of fear of losing what they have invested.
I thought about that idea in regard to the COG, and what came up was the "forsake all". Right off the bat new members invested all of their worldly goods, their name, their association with personal family, home, etc. That is a pretty massive investment in something. The psychology of it is that I've gone and invested everyting. If I leave now, all will be lost. Pretty powerful stuff.
