You're right. And you didn't mention the giving up of university studies, or careers. Even for those of us that had a diploma, having giving that up any work experience so young, it's not like you can walk out of the cult 10, 20, 30 yrs later and walk into a job. For example, a nurse who hasn't worked for 20 yrs, will need to go back to school because things have changed so much in nursing.
So when you've invested so much in years of forsaking all, you really do want to believe the Family leadership's constant promises that: "...this is the year everything is going to happen, ...the great things God's promised are are coming to fruition, ...don't give up the fight, hang in there because it's all about to be fulfilled." It was that kind of stuff that kept me from leaving, plus the fact like you said, if I leave now, all will be lost.
