For outsiders, like myself, to really understand this, I think we have to break it down into something we do understand, like dollars.

A while back, someone put a dollar value on everything a housewife does in the home. The value was astronomical. The idea was to get the working spouse to stop and think about the value they were getting, and what it would cost in the real world to replace all that.

You could put a dollar value on some of the material things you gave up. But, you just can't on some of the non-material things.

You could try to run a balance sheet on the education and job. The cost of getting a Masters Degree starting at age 18, against the years one would have worked in the chosen profession.

Really when you start thinking about it, it boggles the mind.

A real investor would eventually cut his losses, which is what all of you did at some point in time.
