Your thinking couldn't have been too terribly narrow, or you wouldn't be here now. What it sounds like you're feeling bad about is letting someone else think for you and accepting what they told you without questioning things too deeply.
You're not exactly unique that way. Seems like that's pretty much what happened with US intelligence on Iraq. Everyday all of us swallow ideas and information from trusted sources without questioning the validity of the ideas or the reliability the information.
Very few people consistently question authority. Those who do are not the folks who typically succeed at winning friends and influencing others--or moving up the organizational ladder to positions of power and prestige.
