I've wondered the same thing about a non-religious world. The all-forbidden song by Berg, John Lennon's Imagine, "no heaven, no hell= peace on earth". Or could we not have religion sans the trying to force it on others? As you said, there are many beautiful principles in many religions, but when one religion closes its mind to any other religion, they fail to see the beauty found in that religion.
