Rusty is not. He is convinced Mike is a sociopath. However he hasn't yet made the connection that in abracing one he allowed his family to be burned.
One of the things that was disturbing to me about this case where RAndy is concerned, was his abscence of emotion when interviewed, his readiness to speak, and his comments to the press, while Andrea was still in the trial process, that he would like to start a new family. It was very bizarre.
Rusty has a Math degree from Auburn Univ. He is very logical in his thinking as opposed to emotional. I also believe he is completely unaware of how insensitive and reproachable his comments are in the media. For intance, Rusty made the comment that he would never fly the shuttle unless it had a safety rate of 99.9%. But when it comes to Andrea, his pleasure ursurps her safety. Andrea had attempted suicide twice; nevertheless, he took what he said Starbranch told him was a 50-50 chance of Andrea becoming psychotically depressed again with the birth of another child. Starbranch said he told him another birth would certainly make Andrea ill again. He also took the chance with leaving her alone when it was demonstrated the weekend before the killings that she was a danger to the children. Her mother warned Rusty that she had tried to feed solid food to a toothless Mary, and that she could have choked. She then told him not to leave her alone with the kids.
I think it is so negligible of our judicial system that it did not allow obvious evidence regarding the psychotic state of Andrea and jurors were not allowed to know that if she was found guilty by reason of insanity it would NOT mean that she would be back on the sts to re-commit these crimes. But her treatment would have been better.
That's the basis of her appeal, but if Andrea is released after treatment to an insensitive Rusty who is still brainwashed by Woroniecki's spirit, is that any better a situation. Andrea is better off in jail until he gets his head screwed on straight.
The public at large just cannot grasp the effects cults have on intelligent adults that become increasingly vulnerable under their influence. Some, like Andrea, were more vulnerable suffering from psychosis and post partum depression. Also, even after Dr. recommendations that she have no more children, she continued to be a baby making machine and did home schooling on top of it. She had all those stressors, known mental problems, and yet she was left alone in her sad state to watch those kids.
Rusty doesn't believe he was brainwashed by Michael Woroniecki. He believes he was making logical choices on doctrine selection on the basis of his free will. What he doesn't realize is this is exactly what happened to Eve in the garden. Bill Davis was confronted by his mother asking him if he was brainwashed and he said, NO WAY! He was doing everything in free will. No one was forcing him. Rusty thinks like Bill that brainwashing has to be forced. Rusty wasn't following Mike because he was exercising his free will, and wasn't totally submitted to Mike. If that's the case then no one is following Jesus because they are not exactly emulating every facet of his life.
