I just got older and older and older.
If you just keep living,
you're likely to move on.
So maybe now you're 33. When you are 53
you'll have more of a past that you made
for yourself. There will be less time
that someone stole from you, and
more time that you took for yourself.
If I'm lucky, I'll get really old.
Like maybe 83. Then I'll have
all kinds of time I made my own,
and the memories will be good,
because I took the time to live so long.
If I have a blessed death,
I won't be bitter when I'm 73
or disappointed if I live to 83.
But my past will be my present joy,
because that is what happens when
people get to be really, really old.
If you aren't really that old,
like maybe only 23, and it's all
about your past, it might be
you don't have enough past to think about.
When you get to be 43, you might find
you've forgotten about stuff
that happened when you were 13
and even forget that some things
seemed like a such big deal
when you were 23.
This is what I've learned. Just go on living, try to learn from the past, and you'll get a perspective that can only come with time.
