Maybe because the first Gen had made an individual choice of following God or being a Christian whereas the 2nd gen never really were able to make that choice on an individual basis, they were born into it. Then when they saw so-called Christian people doing such horrors, they decided they wanted none of it. Whereas, the first gen realize there are many diverse followings of the teachings of Christ and we happened on a particularly bad one, we know that is not the God of the bible, or at least we know that now. Well, that's just how I see it.
