Many Christians become Christians BECAUSE they HAVE examined themselves, found their lives wanting, and make the decision to repent, join a church, mission, cult, etc. It's a growth process once they do, though, isn't it? I mean, they start out as a babes and they grow and mature (or are supposed to) until they are the full stature of men and women, meaning: they should continue to examine themselves - for sure.
The "nothing good about themselves" thing refers to self effort in regards to earning what God has given as a gift - salvation. It doesn't mean to stop the self effort in regards to getting their lives in order, getting their jobs done, etc..., imo.
Thankfully, we have been able to examine our lives in the cult and grow beyond it.
