I really believe that lots of factors play in, remembering that backgrounds and circumstances cover the whole spectrum is one thing.
Whatever, at first this COG movement seemed a truely idealistic response to the crap of the world at the time. Absolutely out for the best for each other & Jesus.
What's that old quote, "Power corrupts & absolute power corrupts absolutely!"
ALAS...the light very gradually went out and we frogs didn't notice we were starting to boil in the water 'till it was boiling.
The God's truth is some of us danced in & out of the fire...so curious at the power yet wary and flighty enough to not get burned.
Also, don't forget that some managed to stay far enough on the fringes or in sub-domains not directly involved in all the culty weirdities ( they only read about it in Pubs. and wondered when it would pass?)
These are they who were concerned purely with being there for Jesus.
