I remember reading "The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross" when I a teenager. It was the big must-read way back then, and the author argued with many strong and reasonable "supporting facts" and "documentation" that the entire story of Jesus was made up by a cult-like group of hallucenigenic mushroom eaters who wanted to HIDE the fact that they were imbibing mushrooms and indulging in free-sex orgies, so they made up this COVERUP story that they were disciples of a guy named Jesus who said "Love thy neighbor" and died on a cross. And so then, of course, the TRUE message of the gospels was lost for 2,000 years until the author came along to pull out ancient texts to let us know about the coverup and the real truth.

The author of "Sacred Mushroom" got into the Greek and pulled in other languages to prove that the Gospels were all about free sex and hallucenigenic mushrooms. The phallic-shaped stem of the mushroom of course was a penis, supporting the vagina-like cap. And on and on this guy went and he really pulled out his supporting documents and was persuasive.

I mean, it all sounds like a joke now, a pipe dream from the hippy era -- who else would believe it besides the hippys who wanted to believe it -- but the author seriously argued that Jesus as a historical figure never even existed, that it was all about sacred mushrooms and sex.

Just because someone writes a book attempting to debunk the gospels and show how they aren't historical records, doesn't necessarily persuade me.

I also used to read other "highly-documented" books about Atlantis. Maps, charts, language translations, etc.
