I read a book by a famous Jewish lady who psycho-analyzed the relations of the patriarchs & said that in her opinion, the Abraham-Isaac sacrifice event seemed like a dream that Abraham had. She cited the vague dreamlike language describing 'the place of which God had told him (vs.3) and 'the place of which God had told him of'(vs.9) I'm not sure she convinced me, but that's one alternate explanation.
