That experience is similar to some of mine with Muslim people. I have found them to largely be very hospitalble to strangers. I know when stranded in Asia for awhile, a Moslem family took us in and fed us and were nothing but kind to us. There were many instances of generosity and hospitality and I know what you mean about how friendly people can be regardless of religion. They did not reject us for our difference of religion but these were more typical Muslim people. Maybe now that I have explained that I have no political agenda here, and I understand the fear some had of that then we can talk without fear of getting burned?
I definitely do not want to stray into politics and hope that I can be a positive contributor to this site.
