This is something that many people may not fully appreciate in the west. Moslem-on-Moslem violence is a huge problem. Right now we're seeing it in Iraq. It goes on in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Malaysia.
It's very similar to the demographics of crime. Who gets victimized the most by criminal activity--the rich or poor? The poor! And poverty breeds crime, so that it's fundamentally dog-eat-dog, not dog-eat-high-on-the-hog.
We are living in scarey times, I'll second that. I try to stay focused on the fact that I'm going to die one way or the other, and I'm probably going to suffer one way or the other before I die. I would hope to have a better world for my children and grandchildren, but my time is passing and it's quickly becoming their world.
I happen to believe in evolutionary theory, which basically says the human species will adapt or die out as the environment changes. I tend to believe we'll evolve and adapt, but I'm OK if humans go the way of the dinosaurs. I think there is something in us that is eternal, so what's the big deal if this carbon-based form no longer exists as we know it today? Hey, the dianosaurs are still with us--in the carbon-based form of oil. I guess you could call that evolutionary paypback.
