Hey Oldtimer:
I suppose in principle the gathering together has some worth but it is based on one verse in an epistle. I think that Christ is also in the midst where two or three are gathered together in his name. I have had both positive and negative journeys in the established churches. I think the materialistic leanings of people are discovered in all cultures. There is no shortage of men mad upon their idols anywhere in the world where there is greed. In Christianity the Words of Christ are available to most for consideration and guidance. IMO, If the problem was limited to cultural influence only, than conflicting ideology would produce vastly different results. I think there is a universal sameness in the basic character of human nature. The semantics or dynamical differences from one culture to another seem to lie in the means of expression. The actual symbols of expression, specific to each culture, still seem to produce the same results of love, hate, generosity, greed etc. Human interpretations of ethical or moral behavior seem to follow the same basic patterns worldwide.
I agree particularly with your second paragraph, we are all but dust and prone to fault and the influence of our cultural influences. Compassion was found in the heart of a centurian who represented one of the most efficient and violent of military forces in the ancient world. Roman military thought still dominates the behavior of armies to this day. I think we are all full of contrary values. I hate sugar as much as I love twinkies.
What say you
