Maybe you are reading too much into it, or maybe you are right.
My take is that besides the political aspects, she is presenting the issue of how individuals deal with choice, and multiplicity of options at that.
Her conclusion, that in either case, whether in a communist or a capitalist society, people seem to restrict themselves to only a few choices, if not one, is (to me) what can be more useful at a personal level, and worth underlying.
