I was together with a few African-American friends at the time, and I felt so privileged to have shared that moment with them. I had been interested to see what their reactions would be, if there would be gloating, pride, a feeling of vindication, a sense of accomplishment, even relief, or shouts of "FINALLY!" -- anything! But there was nothing along those lines. Just hope, happiness, thankfulness. At most they were happy to be seen as equal human beings, and not as lesser beings just by virtue of their heritage. We did shed some tears and huddle into some group hugs.

That memorable day will be filed away in the collective conscious, along with other memorable moments of history: "what were you doing when 9/11 happened?" or "where were you when JFK was shot?" or "did you see when Armstrong walked on the moon?" or "I'll never forget when I saw the Berlin Wall being torn down."

Did you watch the inauguration? Where were you and who were you with?
