I think this is a slip of the tongue. Throughout the 2008 campaign, Obama was widely accused of being a Muslim by people opposed to his candidacy. John McCain actually defended Obama against these attacks at one point in his campaign. A remarkable moment in the campaign, really. I've always admired McCain.
On Obama's Christian faith, John McCain would likely not have made it an issue, as he is not of an evangelical persuasion himself and had negative things to say about right-wing evangelicals in 2000. Although McCain eventually built bridges to the evangelical political leadership for support in the 2008 election, in 2000 he said the following:
"Neither party, should be defined by pandering to the outer reaches of American politics and the agents of intolerance, whether they be Louis Farrakhan or Al Sharpton on the left, or Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell on the right."
