You're right there are a lot of average Americans that have gone to tea party rallies. Of course they're there: they are people who are scared by the job insecurity, scared about losing their house, etc. When you're frightened you get angry and you need to vent.
But most of the current deficit that tea party speakers decry came from Bush spending. The financial crash, housing market crash and the job losses started under Bush. The no-strings attached bank bailout was Bush's.
The tea party movement needs to thank MSM (mainstream media). Quite often there's a relatively small number of protestors getting major news coverage. In fact tens of thousands of people demonstrating for immigration reform gets less coverage than a few hundred tea partiers carrying their wild signs. MSM has been a big help to the tea party people.
