I am for federal rather than State by State rights to gay marriage. I personally wouldn't care if it was called civil union or marriage if legal terminology made it clear that the same legal rights (and headaches) of couples were recognized whether gay or hetero.
Marriage would actually be simpler from a legal standpoint because a whole set of legal code for what "civil union" is would not have to be determined. If "civil union" has exactly the same legal rights, then why force the issue on terminology? To me, that would be like calling racially mixed marriages "blended civil unions" rather than marriage. What is the point? At one time in American history, recent history, there were States that forbade interacial marriage. In my lifetime, in fact.
