       1. (Techi: Thank You Jesus! Praise You Lord! Thank You Lord for this Bible Class with Grandpa! We really pray that You'll bless it, Lord, and help us to be able to take this test and to learn the things that we need to learn. Please bless Grandpa, Lord, and give him wisdom, in Jesus' name.        Genesis 5 Test!

       2. No. 1: What is this list of fathers and sons called? There's a special word for it. It means "knowledge of beginnings."

       3. No. 2: This Chapter is extremely important because it not only gives us the beginning history of the World, but it also tells us when what very great event took place at the beginning?--So that we can actually figure out approximately how many years ago it was.

       4. No. 3: Who was the oldest man in this list?

       5. No. 4: And he lived nearly how long? You can give it to me in a big round number. Of course, if you know exactly how long he lived, you can give that, but I don't! I can't ever remember that! All I ever remember is that it was nearly a _______ years. You can write the figure or the word, either one.

       6. No. 5: What man in this list never died?

       7. No. 6: Why didn't he die?

       8. No. 7: In this list we are given for the first time the name of a man who was going to become very very famous and be the main hero of the next several Chapters. He was the son of Lamech.

       9. Nos.8-10: And he was the father of three very famous men from whom the whole World's population is descended. There are some "ites" and "ites" and other "ites"! Three names.

       10. That wasn't so hard, was it?--Only ten questions and each one is worth ten points. (Techi: That was easy! I thought you were going to ask us more. I memorised the genealogy.) Oh goodness, you didn't memorise all those names, did you? (Techi: Yes.) Oh, you poor thing! Well, good for you, Honey, good for you! But I told you guys I would not require you to know all those names. (Techi: Well, I know, but it was fun!) Well, good for you, that's very good. All right, exchange papers!

       Test Answers!

       11. No. 1: What is the list of fathers and sons called? (David: Genealogy.) Very good!

       12. No. 2: And this Chapter is important because it tells us when what great event took place? (Techi: Creation.)

       13. No. 3: Who was the oldest man? (Kids: Methuselah.)

       14. No. 4: And he lived how long? (Techi: 969, or nearly a thousand years.)

       15. No. 5: What man in this Chapter never died? (David: Enoch.)

       16. No. 6: And why didn't he die? (David: Because he walked with God.) (Techi: He was translated.) Yes, you could have said "he walked with God," "God took him," "he was translated," any of those.

       17. No. 7: And who is the very famous man who is going to be the star of a whole bunch of Chapters coming up? (Kids: Noah!)

       18. Nos. 8-10: And who were his three sons? (Kids: Shem, Ham and Japheth.) Very good! You kids are so smart!

       Genealogy!

       19. All right, each answer is worth ten points! Correct the paper and give it a grade in both figures and letters, okay? Okay, what did you get, David? (David: I got 90%.) That's A-. And what did you make, Techi? (Techi: 100%.) You did? Your sister's too smart! (Techi: Well, David only missed one.) Which one did you miss, David? (David: The one about genealogy.) Oh, what did you call it? (David: I couldn't think of the word. All I could think of was the "begats.") Honey, I would have given you credit for the "begats"! Why didn't you put it down? (David: Because I couldn't think of the actual word.) Well, let's give him credit for it, because "begats" is the same as genealogy. So there! You got 100! He knew it all the time! See, if you can't think of the exact word, if you put down something that means that, I'll give you credit for it!

       20. (Techi: I didn't spell it right.) Well, I'm not testing you on your spelling. At least David could recognise it, couldn't he? (David: Yes, ha!) Do you want me to spell it for you? (Techi: It starts with "gene," right?) Yes, it has something to do with "genes," and it has the same root prefix as "Genesis." (Techi: Which means "the beginning"!) Yes, and "genealogy" is a study of the beginnings--a study of families or races, a study of sources, a study of generations. It's spelled: "G-E-N-E-A-L-O-G-Y," just like it sounds. Genealogy! A "suffix" is the last part of a word, and whenever you find the Greek suffix "ology," what does that mean? (Techi: The study of something?) Yes! It means "knowledge of." So "genealogy" means "knowledge of beginnings"!

       Junior High Language Course!

       21. I think my "General Languages" course was one of the most useful, helpful and interesting courses I ever took in Junior High School! In the 8th Grade we had a course called Etymology, the study of the roots, prefixes and suffixes of words. A prefix is the first part of the word, a suffix is the last part of the word, and then there's the main body of the word, the root.

       22. And do you know what? It helped me so much, because when I ran into words that I didn't know or understand, I could pick them apart and figure out what they meant! When I was reading and I'd bump into a word I didn't know, I would usually be able to figure out what it meant because we'd learned all these root words, prefixes and suffixes. The largest number of them originally came from Latin, and the next largest number came from Greek.

       23. I can even tell you the name of our teacher: Mrs. Uhr! She was an old lady, probably in her upper 60's or 70's, and she had white hair. She was a dear sweet old lady, I'll bet she was a Christian, and she made it so interesting for us, really fascinating! I just soaked that up, and I'm so glad I did, because it even helped me in later years when I was studying Spanish, because Spanish contains so much Latin. I could begin to get the meaning of some of the words just by remembering the Latin word. And of course when I took Latin, that helped a lot too, but I didn't take Latin until I was in the 9th grade, after that 8th grade study of language.

       24. (Techi: Was that an English course?) No, English was another subject. (Techi: English is basic spelling and reading and writing, isn't it?) Well, it's spelling and the use of the language, and you also learn to conjugate English verbs, like "sit, sat, have sat," the three forms of each verb.

       The Verb "To Lie"!

       25. I notice a lot of people run into trouble with the verb "to lie"! I lie here now. I lay here yesterday. I have lain in the recent past. I've lain here before. But people often have the wrong usage and say, "I laid down." (Techi: Are you supposed to say "I lie down"?) Yes, present tense. (Techi: That does sound weird to me.) I lie down. I lie here now. I lay here yesterday. I have lain here in the past. You never use "laid" unless the verb has an object. I laid the book on the table. I laid myself down. "Laid" has got to have an object, just remember that. You just cannot use it without an object.

       26. So a lot of people get those mixed up, even in the newspaper! I've just about given up trying to teach people the difference between "lie" and "lay" and "laid," etc., because it just never seems to sink in, but I'm trying to help you kids at least to learn the right way. If you speak proper English, people will know you're fairly well-educated.

       27. But the main subject of our present course is what? (Techi: Genesis!) Well, that's the beginning of our study, but we're studying what book? (David: The Bible.) The whole Bible! Well, we're not going to get through the whole Bible, but some of these first Chapters of Genesis are very important because they lay the foundation of your whole knowledge of the Bible, they lay the groundwork. So would you like to go over Genesis Chapter 6 now? (Kids: Yes!)

       GENESIS CHAPTER 6!

       The Angels & the Daughters of Men!

       28. (Verse 1:) "And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the Earth, and daughters were born unto them..." See, it's when those women came along, they started causing all the trouble! It sounds like dear old Moses is blaming it on the women!--Ha!

       29. (Verse 2:) "That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair." Now who do you suppose these "sons of God" were? (Techi: The Angels.) Yes! "And they took them wives of all which they chose." (Techi: Could they have been men?) Well, no, and Verse 4 proves that they were not ordinary men! Let's skip over verse 3 and read that.

       30. (Verse 4:) "There were giants in the Earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them."--Now if they were just ordinary men, that wouldn't have been anything unusual, right? And "...the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown." So they were the sons of Angels and women.

       31. It says, "The sons of God saw the daughters of men," so there's another proof that the sons of God were not men, or there wouldn't have been anything strange about it! So now we know where the giants and the mighty men of old and men of renown came from. And who were these "sons of God"?--Test question! (Techi: Angels!) Yes. It's obvious they were Angels, they were not men. They were just taking as wives the daughters of men. (Techi: And the Lord allowed that?) Yes, the Lord obviously allowed it.

       God's Judgement upon Man!

       32. But now let's go back to the 3rd verse: "And the Lord said, My Spirit shall not always strive with Man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years." What's about to happen? (Techi: The Flood.) So it was only going to be 120 years until the Flood came.

       33. Now why did God say, "My Spirit shall not always strive with Man, for that he also is flesh"? (David: He got tired of trying to make Man be good?) Yes, exactly. God gets tired of worrying with some people, and in this case He got tired of the whole wicked World, except for one family!

       34. (Verse 5:) "And God saw that the wickedness of Man was great in the Earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." Boy, the Devil was having a heyday in those days! It sounds just about like now, right? In fact, Jesus said that in the Last Days it would be like the days of Noah! (See Mat.24:37-39.)

       35. (Verse 6:) "And it repented the Lord that he had made Man on the Earth." What does that mean? (David: He was sorry that He'd made Man.) Right. "And it grieved Him at His heart."

       36. (Verse 7:) "And the Lord said, I will destroy Man whom I have created from the face of the Earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth Me that I have made them." (Techi: Why did it repent Him that He made the animals?) Well, men were doing all kinds of wicked things even with animals.

       37. And now comes this famous name again, our hero! (Verse 8:) "But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord." (Verse 9:) And "these are the generations of Noah..."--If I can get my page open! Do you know what to do if two Bible pages stick together? (David: You lick your fingers or you blow?) Well, you don't want to lick your fingers, which might be dirty, so you blow on the edge of the pages.

       38. "These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations."--Well, as perfect as a man can be. "And Noah walked with God." He was also perfect in his generations, so that means he must have had good sons. (Verse 10:) "And Noah begat three sons." Who were they? (Kids: Shem, Ham and Japheth.) Yes, and that's something you should memorise. We studied that in the last Chapter too.

       39. (Verse 11:) "The Earth also was corrupt before God, and the Earth was filled with violence. And God looked upon the Earth, and, behold, it was corrupt." What does "corrupt" mean? (David: Evil.) Yes, the result of being corrupted is corruption. Rotten is really what it means. "For all flesh had corrupted his way upon the Earth." All other people besides Noah and his family were wicked and evil. That was pretty bad. Just like today, all people but God's children are wicked and evil!

       40. (Verse 13:) "And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before Me; for the Earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the Earth." Destroy the Earth? (Techi: The surface of the Earth.) The surface of the Earth was certainly destroyed. That time the surface of the Earth was destroyed with water, and how is it going to be destroyed next time? (Techi: With fire!) Yes, with a flood of fire.--2Pet.3:10; Rev.20:9.

       Noah's Ark!

       41. (Verse 14:) "Make thee an Ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the Ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch." What's pitch? (David: Is it like tar?) Yes. And what's it going to have inside of it? (Techi: Rooms!) What do you suppose it's going to have rooms for? (Techi: The animals.) Exactly, and the people.

       42. (Verse 15:) "And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the Ark shall be three hundred cubits." Now what is a cubit? (David: From your elbow to your fingertip.) Yes, and that's about what today? (David: A foot-and-a-half, or half a meter.) Right! So if it was going to be 300 cubits long, how many feet is that? (David: That would be 450 feet.) [EDITED: "150 meters"] Right! Techi, don't let your mind wander now.

       43. "And the breadth of it fifty cubits." Now let's let Techi figure this one out. How many feet are there in 50 cubits? (Techi: I'm not good at this.) Yes you are, Honey! You just multiply 50 by 1-1/2. What's half of 50? (Techi: 25.) All right, you just add 25 to 50 and what do you get? (Techi: 75.) Good girl! See? You got it!--75 feet! [EDITED: "25 meters"]

       44. "And the height of it thirty cubits." Now since you need a little math practice, Techi, do you want to figure this one out too?--One-and-a-half times 30. One times 30 is what? (Techi: 30.) And what's half of 30? (Techi: 15.) Right! Add 15 to 30 and what do you get? Do it in your mind. (Techi: 45!) Right! 30 cubits is 45 feet! [EDITED: "15 meters"]

       45. So the Ark was 450 feet long! Are you familiar with the size of a football field, approximately? Well, a football field is 100 yards, or 300 feet long. So the Ark was one-and-a-half football fields long, about the average size of one city block. And it was 30 cubits high, or 45 feet. This ceiling is approximately 10 feet high, so the Ark would be about 4-1/2 times as high as our ceiling! It was a pretty tall boat!

       46. And guess what? These are exactly the same proportions with which they build many big ships today!--The same relative proportion of length to width to height! (Techi: Oh, I see, the proportion, not exactly the same size.) Yes, the same proportions.

       47. It was 75 feet wide, so that's what part of 450 feet? If you divide 75 feet into 450, what do you get, David? I know that's a little difficult to do in your head. We ought to have some notebook paper here to work it out on. There are three 150's in 450, and 75 is half of 150. So if there are three 150's in 450, then how many 75's are there? (David: Six.) Exactly! So the breadth was what part of the length? If 75 goes into 450 six times, then the breadth is what part of the length? (David: One-sixth.) Exactly!

       48. The navies and big ocean liners, etc., still stick to these proportions of the Ark! It was about 4-1/2 stories high, and you can count the decks when you see big ocean liners. The Lord certainly must have not only told them what size to make it, but how to make it, because that was some big boat for one little man and his family to make! No wonder it took him 120 years! (Techi: And I guess there were only four people working on it.) There were eight people. (Techi: Well, the wives wouldn't have helped build it, would they?) Well, they probably cooked and helped with the animals and a lot of other things. Maybe they helped to gather the pitch!

       49. All right, we've got the proportions, and remember that point. This is the same proportion, regardless of size, that many big ships are built in even today, by navies and the big cruise shiplines.

       50. (Verse 16:) "And a window shalt thou make to the Ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above." Now that's a little hard to understand, but most Bible students interpret that to mean that the window was under the roof, and it was a cubit wide all the way around. Savvy? (David: Yes.) So you could look out any direction. (Techi: All the way around?) Just as though you had an opening about a foot-and-a-half wide that went clear around this room. (Techi: And it was open?) Yes. (Techi: But couldn't the rain come in then?) Well, no, because it had a roof. (Techi: That stuck out over it?) Yes. All roofs have eaves that stick out over their walls.

       51. "And the door of the Ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it." How many floors did the Ark have? (Techi: Three.) Three floors! Why do you suppose they had to be so big?--15-foot [EDITED: "5-meter"] floors! (Techi: To hold the big animals!) Right!

       52. (Verse 17:) "And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the Earth to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under Heaven; and every thing that is in the Earth shall die." Everything that's on the Earth. "But with thee will I establish my covenant: and thou shalt come into the Ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.

       53. (Verse 19:) "And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the Ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female." (Verse 20:) "Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the Earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive." Just think, they were just going to come to Noah.

       54. (Verse 21:) "And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them." That was a lot of food!--Because pretty soon I'm going to have you figure out how long Noah and his family had to stay in the Ark. Almost anybody you ask usually says, "Oh, it was 40 days and 40 nights!" (Techi: But that's not true.) I'm going to prove to you that it was a year and 17 days! They had to have enough food on board to feed themselves and the animals for a year and 17 days! No wonder the Ark had to be so big! (Techi: They probably had a whole floor just for food.) Very likely!

       55. (Verse 22:) "Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he." What does that mean? (Techi: He obeyed!) He did it, right! That's a good question for our test: "What did Noah do when God told him to do that?"--He did it! You can either say "he did it" or "he obeyed"!

       Oral Review!

       56. All right, do you think you've got that Chapter pretty well? Any questions? Would you like me to tell you what's going to be on the test? (David: Sure!) Okay, here are the things I'm going to want you to know!

       57. Who were these "sons of God" that married the men's daughters? Now don't write this down, this is oral, ha! Just answer me quickly. (Techi: Angels.)

       58. And what were the results of their unions? What kind of children did the Angels and the Earth women have? (David: Giants.) (Techi: Mighty men, men of renown.) Yes, you're both right.

       59. "And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be..."--when? (David: In the Last Days.) And what was the matter with Man in Noah's day--and now in these Last Days? You can give any of several different words to describe it. (David: They were corrupt.) Yes, and what else? (David: Evil.) Right, and wicked! (Techi: Bad!) That's good, very bad!

       60. "Them's are bad cows!" I'll never forget that old Georgian guy at the filling station when I was travelling with my Mother! We were going through Georgia at night and he said, "Oooh, Ma'am, you'd better not travel this road at night!" We said, "Why?" "Oh," he said, "there are lots of cows on the road!" We said, "That's okay, we're used to having to stop for cows on the road." He said, "Ohhh! But these are bad cows!"--Ha! (Techi: Why were they bad cows?) That was the funny part about it, we didn't know what he meant! The way he talked, it sounded like they were going to just stand there waiting for you to cause you trouble to stop!--Or they were going to charge you or something, like the bulls! (Techi: Did you ever meet any cows?) Yes, we had to stop quite often for the cows to get off the road!

       61. So that one little three-letter word "bad" would describe people in those days, but I'd say you should add "very" to it--that they were very bad! And God was sorry He had made them. (Techi: He repented Himself.) I'll probably ask you, "How did God feel about having made Man?" (Techi: Very bad!) (David: He was sorry.) And not only all that, another thing to remember, He said the Earth was full of violence. Men were very violent!

       62. And you know that I'll ask you about the dimensions of the Ark, so we don't have to go over those again. I'll ask you how many feet long was it, how many feet wide and how many feet high. And what did it have all the way around the top? (David: A window.) (Techi: Under the roof.) Yes. And how many floors did it have? (David: Three.) Three floors.

       63. And how many people did God say He was going to destroy? (Techi: Everybody except for eight.) Yes, except for eight, the Family of Noah. And what were they to take with them? (David: Animals, and lots and lots of food!) All kinds of animals and even birds, because birds have to have a place to land in order to have something to eat, so they couldn't have survived the Flood otherwise.

       64. And how many of each kind of animal did He take? Well, let's wait for the next Chapter to ask that question. But He had to take at least males and females. (Techi: He took seven of all the clean animals and two of every unclean animal.) You're smart! You got into the next Chapter. (David: Does that mean he took the different kinds of each animal?) I don't think it means that, Honey. (Techi: There was probably only one type.) Horses, cows, sheep, that's what I call the main kinds. He knew Man could breed and develop those different types later. (Techi: I wonder what types they had in that day?) Well, some basic types, I'm sure. You've really got a very enquiring mind, Honey! You would make a good lawyer!

       65. So praise the Lord, shall we pray? (David: Amen, thank You Jesus! Thank You Lord for all that we learned tonight and for the good test we had. Thank You, Lord, that we can keep studying Genesis, in Jesus' name, amen.) Amen, God bless you all!
