I never thought that was a fair verdict. Either did the President of the United States, so it was eventually overturned.

The Manson case is a real mixed bag. I've read pretty much everything available on that. Not only did you have the cult/mind control issue running strong, it was an unusual case in that they convicted Manson himself of first degree murder. Nobody ever said that Manson actually killed anyone himself. The jury bought the idea that he was so in control of his followers that their murderous acts were in fact his acts (murder by proxy). He was found as guilty as they were.

For all the cases that seem to dismiss the idea that brainwashing and mind control are real, the Manson case shows that cult leaders can be found guilty even if they never participated in any of the acts that they encouraged others to perform.
