Saint Peter, the Berg Basher

Posted by Mike W. on March 06, 2002 at 22:27:54:

2 Peter shows that there truly is nothing new under the sun. The book of 2 Peter almost sounds as if it was written about David Berg and the Children of God.
Peter speaks in chapter 2 about how false prophets have been around for thousands of years and “just as there WILL be false prophets among you.” 2 Peter 2:1.
There were sex cults in the early days of the Church that the COG seems to mirror. Peter warns that some false prophets will arise who will:

1) deny the Master.
2) Teach licentiousness (adultery, lasciviousness) .
3) Exploit with false words.

He then goes on to show how God did not spare the angels who sinned (sexual sin), the ancient world of Noah (again, licentiousness), nor Sodom & Gomorrah (sexual sin.) These illustrations were given by Peter to be a WARNING about false prophets who preach licentiousness.
Peter gives Lot as an example of one who was spared because he was righteous. Why was he considered righteous? Because he didn’t partake of the licentiousness, and because he also grieved inwardly over it. But Peter warns that the unrighteous false prophets and those who follow them will not be spared, “ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO INDULGE IN THE LUST OF DEFILING PASSION (sexual sin) & DESPISE AUTHORITY (namely, the authority of the Bible). 2 Peter 2:10.
I find it interesting that some believe that a Christian’s sexual conduct has no bearing upon their standing before God. They use Paul’s words to justify sexual immorality, crying GRACE! GRACE! Yet, Peter clearly identifies these people as false teachers. He also says (speaking of Paul’s writings) “…There are some things hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable TWIST to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures. You therefore, beloved, knowing beforehand, beware lest you be carried away with the error of lawless men (those who annul the moral law) and lose your own stability.” 2 Peter 3:16, 17.
Now, this book of 2 Peter is speaking of those IN THE CHURCH. It’s not speaking of the world, nor the Jews. It’s speaking of the Church, and false prophets and teachers who will arise IN THE CHURCH. He speaks of false prophets who teach sexual immorality as suffering the same fate as the angels who fell through sexual sin. These false prophets (and those who follow them) will also suffer the same fate as Sodom and Gomorrah.
They wont be spared. And Peter clearly warns us who they are.
