If you build a web site based on open communication where function and form is not put above the value of its users it may work. I see these boards as open forums where our community can express themselves. If your agenda does not conflict with these values or carry any pretentions or is not overly subjected to off-board driven agendas it might work.

Another concern is getting caught in a re-invent the wheel dynamic that replaces what exisits with something unwanted. If tech oriented redesign is actually driven by any intent to control the information stream that will be a problem for many participants.

Maybe be you could build a sample site. We then could participate in it and give you our sense of how it works for us. The reality is that people ultimately vote with their feet, particularly if they feel manipulated or are being looked upon through a marketers perspective. We may only be one cohort on a demographic plot but we are a loud and potentially contentious one!

Also there is one other thing to consider. Not everyone that accesses these sites is unaware of its problems. Many of us have actually moved well past the fam and are in viable work places in good situations. Part of the charm of these boards is its wonkiness. Ambition is great but I hope the project is designed to be client or "consumer" focused. Anyways I've blabbed enough about it! I will be watching for the site!
