Did you see the movie "Traffic?" There is a scene where a police officer wants to manipulate this drug trafficker for his own purpose. He gets his trust by having his henchmen beat him, then comes in and tells him to stop and gives him food, etc. He then gains all his trust this way. There is more to the scene, but it was quite revealing on how someone could psychologically get another person to be totally dependent on them or look at them as their savior of sorts.
