I can relate to everything you said about the "hugging rituals". As a teen, I used to sneak out of the room after the manditory get-to-gethers where it soon became one big grope-fest. It's taken me years to be able to hug people without associating the act of hugging with something weird, invading, or yucky. Thankfully, the realization of where the "hug" phobia came from, helped me process the negetive emotion and I am now a very effectionate person and comfortable with hugging the people I love and care about. :)
