Well, I don't know if this reply really fits in with Jesse H.'s question of "Where did it all go wrong," but this is what came to my mind.
I was up north visiting a well-known ex-member. There were four of us sitting around the table talking. A CD of "early Jesus music" was put on, and we looked at some old pix. One guy said, "How can we deny that God wasn't behind the music and the message of the early days?"
Well, my thought is this: God may have been behind the music and the message, but I seriously doubt that God was behind DB!
I watched a video last night called The Son Worshippers. It was about the Jesus Revolution. It showed THRONGS of people rallying behind the name of Jesus. It showed hippies in the streets preaching and passing out tracts.
These were NOT the so-called Children of God! They were simply people whom God moved to do something radical.
But is it really that radical of a thing to accept Jesus? Is it really that radical of a thing to turn from drugs to God? It happens all the time! Even in this day and age.
So, when Jesse asked "Where did it all go wrong?" I would think that the answer is: people turned away from Jesus, and turned towards David Berg.
That is where it all went wrong.
