MarJoe

Posted by on July 08, 2002 at 21:15:40:

I was just reading some of the threads here, and remembered a movie I saw in 1972 called "MarJoe." Did any of you ever see that? It was the most amazing thing. A guy was tortured into becoming a child evangelist at age 4, and memorized sermons, was an incredible speaker, and did the tent revival circuit with his "stage mother" mom who ended up getting caught in a motel with one of the Pastors they were doing a revival for. Anyway, the movie is a documentary about his life, and he invites a film crew along with him at age 28 to do some of the places he used to preach at as a child up until the age of 14 or so. He would get the crowd mesmerized, and get them to give vast amounts of money, and he was a practicing atheist at the time. TAlk about religion being an opiate of the people! It was such an expose on the idiotic mindset of the rural bumpkins and poor people who were manipulated by these money hungry so called Pastors and evangelists. Sort of like Jan and Paul Crouch today. Granted they are a bit more "glitzy" and all. Anyway, I saw the video on ebay and am trying to get it. It's very rare, and hard to get hold of. If I get it, I'll make it available. It reminds me of what some of our SGA's are going through when they leave, and turn their backs on their parents for raising them in the cult, and on God for letting it happen. there's a message there for people like us who have experienced life at this level. I barely still have my faith, but it's riddled with doubt and questions, and will probably never be the same because of the way my soul was abused by Berg and his idiocy. Anyway, just wondered about that movie. If you haven't seen it, it's something that would blow your mind. I'll let you know if I get it or not.
