Part of why I don't like the cut and paste stuff that goes between the different boards is that context gets lost. The beginning of this thread was a single quote from a long message that was part of a thread over on NDN. So, the discussion here kind of grows off that one, out of context quote.

To put it in context, someone asked what ever happened to Family music. The idea beign that the old music was far superior to the new music. My wife, Jane, said that she still liked some of the old songs like the one that says something about "Climb that mountain". For saying this, she was immediately branded "Pro-Family" and a "Hypocrtical", "their (the Family's) rug", "sitting on the fence", and untrustworthy for being a lukewarm sympathizer.

Pretty harsh words for someone who only admitted to still liking a few old songs.

From that sprang my observation, which was transplanted here as grist for the mill.

You had some questions:

"What's wrong with picking and chosing friends?"

I could ask the same question, since Jane and I are made into devils, name called and personally attacked on an ongoing basis because we have chosen friends who are still in the Family.

"I just don't see that it's that easy to pigeonhole exmembers as you do."

Think harder about that statement. Haven't we been pigeonholed? Branded as "Pro-Family" along with all that kind of title implies? (Pro Child-Molesting, Pro Masterbation to Jesus, Pro Sexual Sharing...etc).

"I don't know anyone who thinks you are evil - anyone I know?"

Yes, but they don't use their real names for the most vicious attacks, and they know that I am not allowed to disclose who they are. But, you know them, and consider them friends, from what I gather.

"Sounds pretty harsh to me"

Yeah, it is harsh. All the way around.

"So, what you are saying is that if someone doesn't agree with you, you are being rebuked, however, if you don't agree with someone then you are enlightening them?"

No, I'm not saying that. I am saying that when I happen to agree with certain people I'm some kind of genius, and when I don't I'm some kind of mental defective. I think it is impossible that my IQ changes back and forth so rapidly.

I think that this particular community demands a maximum amount of tolerance from everyone around them, and gives almost none in return.

I'm just reporting on what I see. I might be wrong, but it doesn't make me stupid, or an enemy, or evil, or a fenced sitter, or a fornicator, or a masturbator, or a child molester, or someone who thinks any of that is okay.

It just makes me someone with a different opinion.
