My daughter in the F.

Posted by Acheick on July 25, 2002 at 09:10:27:

One of my daughters just returned from visiting her sister in the F. The reports I have been hearing are making me very sad. The daughter in the F. now has had her fourth child and there seems to be no let up for the future. I think she is getting very tired and this last time she asked for my prayer for delivery because she has a hard time with it. I tried to advise her that it was ok to take pain medication, that her sister did and it was a beautiful and stress free delivery. She didn't respond. I assume they are still on that everythiing must be completely natural ideology. Anyway, I get the feeling she is getting tired and feeling somewhat oppressed by her husband who seems to have some of the same attributes as her father. She can't even cut her hair without his approval. She can't do anything without his approval, she doesn't know how to drive, doesn't do the banking, doesn't know anything, not even the directions to her new house. I see a repeat performance here and it's making me very, very sad. This is this patriarchal ideology and its very subtle but very damaging. My daughter reports that she couldn't carry on any meaningful conversation with her, if any sensitive subject came up, her sister would clam up. She's extremely defensive as she knows we all have our views about the F. and her lifestyle that we don't agree with. I'm just really sad about all this.
