Why not try NRM - new religious movement? and new religious movements always go overboard at first until they mature as a movement. I think its called Maturation of a Movement.
And calling someone a cult depends on what your definition of a cult is. Ill agree that buddist group Aum Om or whatever they were were a cult & they gassed a tokeyo subway. But I think there's a difference. maybe you could sayat its worst the Family had 'some' cult tendencies but its not like they cant learn and grow.
