Unless they are striking at something they are really lazy slow snakes. If you push them they will just move a little and coil up. I tried to get one to move away from the gate by hosing it down and it still just moved slowly away. Most of the time they will warn you if you get too near. Then you can just walk around them or let them move on. I wouldn't recommend picking one up. It's a good thing that they are not fast, aggressive attack snakes like cobras.
