this discussion touches on issues hotly debated w/in the evangelical community a few years back. perusing the archives from 1996 of cornerstone magazine and wellspring retreat (wellspringretreat.org) you will find some interesting and thought provoking perspectives, imo.

i would agree that the journey to recovery goes thru stages, and understanding the psychological (and spiritual) dimensions of the "cult experience" are very helpful in sorting thru the question of taking responsibility, how much and for what, etc. It takes time to gain perspective.. and imo a strong sense of grace, in order to process these issues. and as others point out...the issues vary greatly from individual to individual. personally, i thank God for a loving savior who knows the whole deal, and loves me anyway.
