Seems like a nice place for the elderly. Gee, maybe Maria will end up there one day! wouldn't that be a switch, having her parents take care of her.
Maybe Maria, being the homely preacher's daughter that she was, just gave in to the temptation of being Berg's mistress - it was just too tempting for her. Once she embarked on that road, there was no turning back. Now look what she's done. You know, I fantasize meeting her one day and giving her a piece of my mind.
