No, I don't think that's necessarily so. Why do you think that when Christians die, the two biggest questions they're often asked is, "Are you ready to go?" and "Are you right with God?" Not that that impairs their salvation, but if you're leaving people behind you've hurt, you must deal with it, otherwise you're leaving unfinished business.
This is the whole reason people make "deathbed confessions". They're hurrying to get things off their chest and make things right.
I think in Rick's case he certainly did apologize as much as he could, but there were people he hadn't met. I wish some of his tapes could be transcribed and published so people could see that.
