I understand completely what you're saying and although I have asked that question many a time.
I believe the answer is that he was saved.
Deceived by his ego and the demonic spirits that he opened himself up to yes. Anyone of us, has the choice to do good or evil, to obey or disobey. He chose the latter because of his pride.
Remember, the Lord told us that there will be men rising among you, deceivers. He warned us many a time Mt. 24. 5 and several other verses about false christs and false prophets rising up among us. DB, was and will not be the only one that will rise amongst the followers to deceive.
Although, I am not the Lord,I know that rewards will be before us. I'm sure that we will see in those days the judgement of the Lord for eternity of these false prophets. "It were better for a weight to be hung on their neck and thrown into the sea then to hurt one of these little ones that believe in me."
You have to ask yourself where your culpability begins, no one drugged, chained and whipped you to become a follower. You have to bare some of the responsibilty yourself. Of course, we were lied to, decieved, made to feel afraid and guilty if we didn't follow. But, I got to say in my own life that there was many a red flag which I ignored and I kicked myself in the ass for not obeying and thinking I was hearing voices of the demons when now I look back and realize that it was the Lord our God speaking. I feel, that, I wasted four years of my life that I didn't need to waste.
The question of forgiveness. I know most of our hearts are hurt, and it is very difficult to forgive when your heart is hurting. First off, I recommend that you forgive yourself for all the wasted years. Let's face it, we screwed up. God was faithful to warn us in our hearts. Why forgive those who trespass against you like DB? Because, of this simple reason, they no longer have power over you and true healing begins.
Why did God let this happen to us? Read De 13 and Eze 13. You got out, you have passed the test! Gosh, I still have brothers and sisters I've known for over 30 years that are still in there. Still, deceived, too damn scared and hard hearted to get out.
And remember most of all. Life is one big learning experience.
