I kinda take that approach to all their life decisions now, backing off and saying, "Ok, this is what happens if you continue eating all that candy (open mouth wide). I let them choose and learn the hard way if that's what they want to choose. They're learning and who knows; maybe by the time they reach a mid life crisis, they'll smarten up.
