Unwritten understanding? Not so!

"the unwritten understanding is very clear: 'Speak out publicly against the Family and you will NEVER see your kids again. Ever.' So they have a huge price to weigh, and I think a few oldtimers are in that position."

There are are a lot veiled threats and not-so-veiled threats by the Berg and Maria in print, like this recent one regarding the anti-Family documentary:

"Such experiences of participating in projects of this nature have often proven unpleasant for former members as well as hindering their communications with parents still in the Family" (excerpted from a recent Grapevine: "prayer request: anti-Family documentary in the works")

This basically warns that SGA exers will lose touch with their parents in the Family if they keep it up. Many other publications show this method of blackmail they use against people with loved ones in the group, and their practice of separating Families, contrary to their marketing themselves as a wholesome family-centered ethical group.
