It took me quite some time to figure out why some old time leaders used to do when they vanished into thin air sometimes. They didn't want to answer taugh questions so they would pack up and go leaving behing the little sheep to answer. When the going got rough the sheep were left alone to fend for themselves.
Not that you are one of those dreadful, awful leaders because you'll be back like McArthur in the glory of victory but your abrupt retreat just reminded me of times past.
