Some people would believe that once joining the cult as a free exercise of free will, the decision to leave it ccould only come through much "deprogramming". After yielding one's free will to others, it requires a lot of "something else" to get it back. The cult doesn't willingly give it back but it is the follower who has to "wake up" at some point in order to get it back. Until that point, the follower is under the spell of the cult and, what kind of "free will" does she have? Tricky, isn't it?
