Both the French and Bush were proud

I agree France was stalling & that their motives weren't all the best for doing so, & I agree that hindsight is better. But for me this is not hindsight. I thought it at the time. I saw it as a golden offer to be seized immediately.

France wanted to assert its voice and authority and were adamant in promising a veto, to the point where it was ridiculous. But when they made that final offer, it was the best opportunity that could have happened. Bush chose to be as stubborn and proud as the French by ignoring it.
