Jo, thanks for following up. I felt bad about the question re: possible sexual abuse by Zerby family members and did not intend to make an accusion by addressing the issue. After thinking things over, I felt like GZ really had no idea of his aunt's criminal history or just how extensive her pathology appears to be.
I think it's entirely possible that the Zerbys were very good parents and that Karen is simply a bad seed. It happens, and from what we're currently learning about psychopathy, it is reasonable to suggest she was born with a neurological defect that affected her character development.
I'm not suggesting that this somehow makes her less responsible for her choices.
