You point out very well the two central points of the problem with cults, particularly the COG.

First, the leader's world of value is what the disciples perceive and their public actions are work to affect that world. There is little concern of what outsiders will think. It works for those in hiding but not for the streetwalkers who have to face those outsiders.

Second, that their conscience is malformed: "Karen cannot hear her conscience speak of sin or transgression because it is dumb. Her conscience is deaf and cannot be pricked by a conviction that she has done injury to others. This is why she cannot repent."

In addition, these two points may also explain the large turn over of members and the departure of so many SGAs as well.

The "defectors", as you say, show that not all of the people ever associated with the cult have a seered conscience and many are able to see through the superficial impressions.

For this reason alone it is a good idea to compare and contrast the Family's doctrines with sound Christian doctrines. This will show those who care that TF's doctrines are not and cannot be Christian.
